TOURS.ID - Like the living dead zombies

Hearing the term 'dead rise' would immediately remember zombies. Zombie is a term often used in a film when describing the undead. In Indonesia alone, the undead or zombie is still there. There is a phenomenon about it in one of the districts in South Sulawesi, Tana Toraja. It was said at the funeral ceremony held by the local community, there is usually someone who can raise the dead bodies and control it. The story about this tradition has been recognized by the people of Toraja long ago.

Once, in a village called Sillanang a mass grave that is located in the cave. Villagers said that the bodies were stored in a place that never rot. Then the bodies were also given special treatment, as do the embalming process like mummies in ancient Egypt. However there are also saying that the body was not decomposed and not purely embalmed. Not only that, a population of about named Tampubolon also suspect that there is some kind of special substances that can make the bodies become rotten. There is also a story that said that there was a corpse walking controlled by a handler in addition to the mass graves. The walking corpse like people who are still alive, but limping a bit hobbled.

It turned out that the bodies proficiency level is controlled by a handler with the aim to lead him back to the final destination, which is his own. Why is that? It is said that once the Toraja people often roam in some mountainous areas. Usually they do not use any means of transportation while browsing. In the heavy browsing, there are people who can not afford to continue the journey again. So they fall sick, then died because of drugs taken was minimal. They did not want to leave the bodies of their comrades, but if the body was taken home will also be troublesome. Therefore, it was performed in an occult ritual. They evoke the corpse, then controlling and guiding the bodies are up to their respective homes. During the ritual is executed, there are restrictions that must be considered. The handler or anyone else should not touch the bodies are to arrive at his home. When touched only slightly, the spell will be lost. Upon arriving at his home, then the bodies will be returned to sleep.

Ritual is often called the Ma'nene. In addition to resurrect the corpse, this tradition is also done in memory of the ancestors or relatives who have died. Ma'nene term can also be interpreted as the bodies that have been preserved. Toraja people assume that death is something that is very sacred and should be respected.

There is still another story about this ritual, stems from a tracker named Pom Yag Rumasek hundreds of years ago. He hunts up into the middle of the mountain forests of Balla. Turns the hunter found the body lying in the middle of the road with a very sad condition for remaining skeletons only. Feeling pity, he immediately brought the body was dressed uses. After that he went on to hunt.

After the incident, whenever Pong Rumasek eyeing hunted animal, he must always easy to get it. Many strange events that happened, such as agricultural crops in the house suddenly flourish. Therefore, he made a conclusion that the body of a deceased person must remain glorified. So people always hold the ritual Baruppu once after a big harvest in August.

In addition, Ma'nene ritual also often interpreted as the glue of kinship among the people. This custom was not written, but always be obeyed by every citizen. For example, one of the couples there who died. So the bereaved spouse should not be remarried before holding Ma'nene ritual. Before carrying out the ritual, they are still regarded as a legitimate couple. But after doing this ritual, the surviving spouse can already be considered unmarried and married again. Interesting right?

There is also a story that says that the corpse evoke culture originated from the Japanese occupation era, where there was an Toraja people who work as construction workers to help create a timber ship for the Japanese army. But when the Japanese fell into the hands of allies, namely America, these workers end up working in the torture, coercion, and without recompense. Until finally the workers were told to dig a hole the length. Then they lined up at the edge of the hole and shot one by one to be buried en masse in the hole. But for those who qualify, they pursue an occult science which can generate the corpses were returned to the mountains to be buried with their families.

Version of the story of this tradition is actually quite a lot. But the bottom line, the Toraja people are still clutching the tradition to honor the spirits of the ancestors. Until now, this ritual is performed once a year. The whole Torajanese also believe that if the customs are violated, then the disaster will engulf the whole village. Calamity that can come in the form of crop failure or a family member is ill and suffering prolonged. Once thickened customs and culture in the Land of Toraja have to make a lot of people from outside the region to foreign tourists come to visit every year to witness the rituals, one of which is the ritual evokes this corpse.
